Farmers suffered losses due to unseasonal rains, govt to pay compensation

New Delhi: Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar today said on Saturday (October 15) that crops have been damaged due to unseasonal rains and the government is waiting for information from the states to assess the damage. Tomar told the press, 'Definitely, crops have been damaged due to unseasonal rains. The survey is underway and we are waiting for information from the states to assess the extent of the damage.'

The Union Minister said that farmers are dependent on monsoon, which is unpredictable. He has said that despite all the measures, farmers are dependent on nature. He has said that the State Governments have State Disaster Relief Fund, which they can use to provide compensation to the farmers. He said that after due process of assessing the extent of damage caused to the crop, more amount would be sanctioned from the National Disaster Relief Fund. 

Narendra Singh Tomar has said that the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for Rabi crops will be announced soon. Sowing of rabi crops, especially oilseeds and pulses, has started across the country and so far around 7.34 lakh hectares of land has been sown, according to data released by the Agriculture Ministry on Friday. Wheat is the main Rabi crop, but the sowing data from the states is yet to be received.
