Panaji: Nearly 200 people living in Goa's capital Panaji have been forced to leave their homes and move elsewhere due to a thick layer of smoke after a fire broke out at a paint manufacturing plant in Pilerne Industrial Estate. The fire was brought under control after several hours of struggle.

North Goa District Magistrate Mamu Hege said on Wednesday that the fire broke out at the Berger Baker Coatings Factory located in the industrial area at around 2.30 pm on Tuesday. The district administration later issued an advisory, asking people living within a two-km radius of the factory to shift elsewhere as the smoke could cause health problems. Meanwhile, CM Pramod Sawant along with senior officials visited the factory site on Tuesday night. A senior official of the district administration said that the fire was brought under control in the early hours of Wednesday.

Around 200 people living near the factory have shifted on their own, the official said. He has said that 'There was no need for the government to interfere because the people themselves went to their relatives and friends.' CM Pramod Sawant had said on Tuesday that the government has ordered an inquiry into the incident.
