SRINAGAR: With construction in full swing, an electric train for the 137-kilometer Baramulla-Banihal railway corridor is scheduled to be inaugurated on the day of Gandhi Jayanati, October 2, 2022.

According to sources, the government of Jammu and Kashmir has been cooperating on this project since August 2019 with Indian Railways and Indian Railway Construction Company Limited.

The project's PCEE inspection will take place on September 26, 2022, and it will be officially opened on October 2 said Mr.Abid Amin Shah, additional general manager of Indian Railway Construction Company Limited.

He stated that the Budgam-Baramulla section of the project is already finished, and that the Budgam-Banihal segment will be inspected on September 26 and inaugurated on October 2. The overall project cost is 324 crore. Trails from Budgam-Baramulla have already been run three to four times, while trails from Budgam-Banihal will begin running on the twentieth of this current month, he added.

He claims that the 137.73-kilometer electrification route will have three major sub-stations at Qazigund, Budgam, and Baramulla from which power would be provided to the train line's overhead equipment. The project is on track to cut emissions and save money by 60% when compared to the use of fuel.

Along with this, efforts are being made to connect Banihal and Katra. The connection between Katra and Banihal will be finished, improving Kashmir's connectivity to the rest of the nation. You might remember that the first rail service to reach Kashmir did so in 2013 under the leadership of Manmohan Singh, the prime minister at the time.
