Snow now adds to Uttarakhand woes after rain, 13 trekkers killed

Dehradun: At least 13 persons including 10 trekkers have died at different places due to snowfall in the Himalayan hilly areas of Uttarakhand. The deceased include three porters working for the Indo-Tibetan Border Police deployed along the Indo-China border in Uttarkashi district. Five persons have been rescued while six are missing.

A group of trekkers is said to have gone missing on October 14 on the route of Lamkhaga Pass near Harsil in Uttarkashi district, 230 km from Dehradun. Out of the nine porters who accompanied them, 6 managed to return safely. They informed the officers about three missing porters and 8 trekkers. District Disaster Management Officer (Uttarkashi) Devendra Patwal said that the rescue team reached an agreement with the State Disaster Response Force and Air Force personnel and spotted five bodies near Lamkhaga pass on Thursday morning.

He also said, "The bodies will be airlifted from the occasion soon. Rescuers managed to save one of the trekkers found alive there. He has been admitted to a military hospital. Seven of the eight missing trekkers were from West Bengal while one was from Delhi. The bodies of three porters who took the missing ITBP soldiers to their posts near the border on October 17 were recovered on Thursday. They were brought to the ITBP base by an Air Force helicopter.''
