THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: By July, five Rajya Sabha members from Kerala will have completed their tenure.

While Congress' A.K.Antony, the LJD's M.V.Shreyams Kumar, and the CPI-K.Somaprasad M's will step down on April 2, superstar Suresh Gopi, a nominated member of the BJP, will step down on April 24. On July 4, the term of K.J.Alphons, a CPI-M independent legislator who later became a BJP MP, comes to an end. Only Congress veteran Antony qualifies as a full-time politician among the five leaders. Although he has previously stated his plans to leave Delhi and dwell in his little house in the state capital city, it is unclear whether the 81-year-old will be involved in state politics.

Somaprasad, 64, was a surprise selection by the CPI-M because he has never been a flamboyant leader. In his Kollam district, he was actively involved in party politics.

Shreyams Kumar, the son of famed Socialite M.P.Veerendra Kumar, is a media mogul rather than a full-time politician. Though he is the president of the Loktantrik Janata Dal, he is most recognised for the Mathrubhumi media company that he leads.

He has served in the legislature twice, but after losing in the 2016 Assembly elections, his father opted to rejoin the CPI-M-led Left Front. After his father died, he was handed the remainder of his father's term in the Upper House, which is how he became a member.

Despite being allocated a CPI-M sitting seat, he was defeated by the Congress in the Kalpetta Assembly elections in April 2021.
