Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday, demanding that to look into the "distressful" deportation of Filippo Osella, an anthropologist and academician from the United Kingdom, who was visiting the state for a conference. Vijayan has asked the Prime Minister to "please look into this situation with the seriousness it deserves and issue directions to prevent recurrence of such incidents in the future," according to his letter.

Professor of Anthropology and South Asian Studies at the University of Sussex (UK), Osella arrived in Kerala on March 24 for a seminar at the Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT). On arrival at the Thiruvananthapuram airport, however, he was deported.

"It is distressing that a renowned scholar such as Prof. Osella had to face deportation at the Thiruvananthapuram airport when he arrived for a seminar in Kochi," the CM wrote. He went on to say that the professor has done substantial research in a variety of locations, including Kerala, where he is examining traditional fishing practises.

In his letter, Vijayan said that India has a "strong tradition of accepting foreign researchers and social scientists" for research purposes, and that they have produced "important" publications. "This history of being nice and open to scholars must continue," he remarked.

With fieldwork in Kozhikode and a number of Gulf nations, Osella's new research investigates the contemporary transition of South Indian Muslims. His new research, supported by the Sussex Sustainability Research Programme, looks into novel approaches to make traditional fishing in Kerala safer and more sustainable by collaborating with traditional fishermen and weather forecasters to produce knowledge about marine weather and fish resources.
