Amritsar: Former diplomat Taranjit Singh Sandhu, the BJP candidate for Amritsar, filed his nomination papers for the ongoing Lok Sabha elections. Accompanied by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, Sandhu held a roadshow before submitting his nomination papers. Jaishankar expressed confidence in Sandhu's ability to serve as a Member of Parliament and praised his diplomatic service to the country. He emphasized Sandhu's popularity and stated that he would be an ideal candidate to represent Amritsar and Punjab in the Parliament.

Prior to filing his nomination, Sandhu conducted a roadshow in an open jeep, accompanied by S Jaishankar and a large number of BJP workers. The roadshow covered nearly three kilometers. Sandhu also visited Gurdwara Chhevin Patshah in Amritsar to offer prayers. Sandhu, a native of Amritsar, joined the BJP in March. He retired as the Indian envoy to the US on February 1. During his tenure, he played a crucial role in strengthening bilateral ties, including managing then-President Donald Trump's visit to India.

Punjab will vote in a single phase on June 1 to elect 13 members to the 18th Lok Sabha. In the previous general elections, the BJP won two seats, while the Congress secured eight seats. The counting of votes for all 543 Lok Sabha seats is scheduled for June 4.
