Jammu: Heavy rains have caused flooding around Amarnath cave. Due to heavy rains in the mountains around the cave, the reservoirs and the surrounding waterfalls were flooded at around 3 pm today. An immediate alert was issued. So far, more than 4,000 pilgrims have been evacuated from the area. The situation is under control. Earlier, on July 8, there was a cloudburst near the Amarnath cave. In that incident, 15 persons died and more than 40 went missing.
The same cloudburst was reported at around 5.30 pm on July 8. In which many tents built near the cave were destroyed. Rescue operations were immediately launched by disaster management agencies of security forces. Army helicopters were pressed into service to take the injured persons to hospitals. The trip was also cancelled then. Thereafter, the yatra was resumed on 16th July.
The 43-day-long annual Amarnath Yatra began on June 30 last through two major routes (the 48-km-long traditional Nunwan-Pahalgam route in south Kashmir and the 14-km-long Baltal route of Ganderbal in central Kashmir). According to officials, more than 2.30 lakh pilgrims have visited Baba Barfani in the holy cave so far this year. Amarnath Yatra will conclude on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan on August 11. According to officials, a total of 36 pilgrims have died due to the Amarnath yatra this time. At the same time, 15 other pilgrims lost their lives in the flash floods near the holy cave on July 1.
