Floods wreak havoc in Assam and Meghalaya, break 60-year record, 31 people killed

Guwahati: At least 31 people have lost their lives due to floods and landslides in Assam and Meghalaya in the last two days. Around 19 lakh people have been affected in 28 districts of Assam, while one lakh are forced to stay in relief camps. Of the total casualties in the floods, 12 people have died in Assam and 19 in Meghalaya. Heavy flood is also being reported in Tripura's capital Agartala. The city has recorded 145 mm of rain in just six hours. Campaigning for the Tripura by-election has also been affected due to this.

Officials have informed that Mousinram and Cherrapunji in Meghalaya have recorded record rainfall since 1940. Official sources said this is the third highest rainfall in Agartala in the last 60 years. All educational institutions have been closed due to flash floods. Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma has announced a compensation of Rs 4 lakh to the families of those killed in the floods. Nearly 3,000 villages in Assam have been flooded and 43,000 hectares of agricultural land submerged in water. Several embankments, culverts and roads have been damaged. In Assam, a boat carrying flood-affected people capsized in Hojai district, leaving three children missing while 21 others have been rescued safely.

At the same time, PM Modi called Up Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma today and asked him about the flood situation and assured all possible help from the Centre. Cm Sarma tweeted, "PM Modi called me at 6 this morning to take stock of the flood situation in Assam. Expressing concern over the hardships being faced by the people due to this natural calamity, the Hon'ble Prime Minister assured all possible help from the Central Government. I am grateful for their assurance and generosity. '
