According to a non-profit news site, Florida's jail system is in serious condition due to an emergency-level exodus of prison officers. Up to 200 officers leave the system every month, while prison wardens "abandon ship at significant rates — five individuals in five months," according to Ricky Dixon, who has been serving as the secretary of the Florida Department of Corrections since November.

Without a comparable fall in Florida's jail population, remaining officers are compelled to work "very long overtime hours" in understaffed conditions. "Without the right security staff to man them, we can't adequately operate the systems we have presently," he added.

Florida's Department of Corrections is the country's third-largest state prison system. There are 143 facilities administered by the Department around the state, including 43 main institutions, 33 work camps, 15 Annexes, 20 work release centres, and six road prisons/forestry camps.
