The 82-year-old Pelé, a Brazilian maestro whose mesmerising talent and athleticism made him one of football's greatest players, passed away at the age of 82.

In November, Pelé, whose colon tumour was removed in 2021, was readmitted to the Albert Einstein hospital in So Paulo due to his failing health. 'Our dear King of Football' passed away at 3:27 p.m. local time on Thursday, according to a hospital statement. This was "due to the failure of many organs, a result of the advancement of colon cancer coupled with his previous clinical condition," the statement said.

King Pelé, who died away peacefully tonight, was known for his inspiration and love,  a statement on his official Instagram page read. On his voyage, Edson won over the globe with his sporting prowess, put an end to a war, did humanitarian work all over the world, and propagated what he thought was the answer to all of our problems: love. Future generations will be left with a legacy of his words from today. Love always, always, always.

Brazilian officials announced three days of national mourning, the Wembley Stadium arch was lit in Brazilian flag colours, and leaders of nations bowed before the man who overcame poverty as a boy to become a legend.
