Kolkata: The Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) deployed at Kolkata airport has got a big success. This unit of the Customs Department has seized a large consignment of foreign currency in the form of US dollars smuggled from Dubai. The value of the recovered consignment is said to be around Rs 9.34 crore. This is said to be the biggest action in the last few years. It is suspected that this currency was to be used here in drugs and gold smuggling or hawala racket. At the same time, the agencies suspect that the wires of this currency may be connected to a large syndicate.
According to information received from the Customs Department, on Thursday, input was received about a syndicate being active in Kolkata. It was told that this syndicate is going to smuggle foreign currency here. On this information, the AIU started investigating. In particular, the flight from Dubai to Kolkata was monitored. At the same time, as soon as the flight landed in Kolkata, a young man was detained on the basis of suspicion and checked, and then the whole matter was revealed.
According to sources in the customs department, the currency was hidden in clothes inside the trolley bag of the detained accused. The CISF got suspicious during the screening. The accused was then interrogated. But even after questioning for a long time, the accused did not tell from where he got so much foreign currency.
