New Delhi: Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar expressed unwavering confidence on Saturday that India will secure a permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), despite facing considerable opposition from various countries.

Speaking at an event during his visit to Perth for the Indian Ocean Conference, Jaishankar emphasized the evolving perception of India on the global stage. He acknowledged the challenges ahead, noting that competition is fierce and some countries will attempt to impede India's progress towards a UNSC seat.

Highlighting India's growing influence, Jaishankar underscored the trust placed in India by other nations to articulate positions that they themselves may be unable to express. He emphasized that India's representation on the UNSC is desired by many countries due to its trusted stance and performance in various UN elections.

Jaishankar outlined India's vision for the next 25 years, during which he anticipates significant transformation both domestically and internationally. He stressed the importance of India ensuring its domestic affairs are in order while continuing to work towards global recognition.

India has long advocated for UNSC reform, arguing that the current composition does not reflect contemporary geopolitical realities. Despite facing resistance from established members, India remains steadfast in its pursuit of a permanent UNSC seat.

As of now, the UNSC consists of five permanent members - China, France, Russia, the UK, and the US - each possessing veto power over substantive resolutions. India's campaign for a permanent seat underscores its aspirations for greater global influence and representation.
