New Delhi: Former Chief Election Commissioner TN Seshan died on Sunday at the age of 86. Seshan breathed his last in Chennai. He was the 10th Chief Election Commissioner of India. He served in this post from 12 December 1990 to 11 December 1996. TN Seshan's full name was Tirunellai Narayan Iyer Seshan. TN Seshan was born on 15 December 1932 in Palakkad district of Kerala.

While in the post of the Chief Election Commissioner, he made many changes in the Indian election system. The voter ID card was also started by him in India. TN Seshan was also awarded the Magsaysay Award in 1996. Seshan said in a brief speech at the ceremony that even after poverty and illiteracy, the voter of India goes to the polling booth and stamps in the name of the candidate he considers worthy of ruling.

TN Seshan, a 1955 batch IAS officer, held several government posts, ranging from the Secretary of Defense to Cabinet Secretary. However, during this time he did not get as much fame as he gained after becoming Chief Election Commissioner in 1990. After sitting in this post, Seshan made many such works and reforms, which proved to be a milestone in the Indian election process. Along with this, Seshan also banned the purchase of votes.
