Even to the commencement of the T20 World Cup, India appears to have suffered two significant injury blows. All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja was already ruled out before the selection was revealed, but it now appears that fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah may also be out because of a back ailment. For the major competition, India will be without their top fast bowler and an important all-rounder.

However, according to former India captain Dilip Vengsarkar, the team may have overlooked a few players who deserved to be included. Along with the hitters Shreyas Iyer and Shubman Gill, the youthful tearaway Umran Malik, and veteran fast bowler Mohammed Shami, whose exclusion from the T20 World Cup roster stunned many former players, are among them.

"There is no out-of-the-box thinking. I would have picked Umran Malik because of his speed. He is a guy who is bowling 150kmph; you’ve got to pick him now, you can’t pick him when he becomes a 130kmph bowler,” said Vengsarkar. “Shreyas Iyer is in good form and he missed out. Mohammed Shami and Shubman Gill should also be on the team. I am impressed with Gill.”

Umran grabbed attention in the latter stages of the 2021 Indian Premier League (IPL) and throughout the 2022 competition by consistently exceeding the 150kph mark and seldom bowling below 145kph. He was called up to the Indian team because of his success in the 2022 season, but the 22-year-old has not yet made an impression in his brief international career.

Umran ought to have also been chosen for the 2022 Asia Cup, according to Vengsarkar, who previously served as the chairman of the Indian selection committee. "You needed fast bowlers in Dubai because the surface was flat, lacking in grass and bounce. It would be talked around you if you had medium pacers. You required quick bowlers who could outpace the hitters, he remarked.
