CHENNAI: Murasoli Selvam, former editor of the Tamil daily Murasoli, passed away at the age of 82 in Bengaluru due to health issues. He was the son-in-law of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi and a prominent figure in the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party.

Selvam, who was married to Karunanidhi’s daughter Selvi, was also the younger brother of former Union Minister Murasoli Maran and the brother-in-law of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin. His contributions to Murasoli, the mouthpiece of the DMK, and his dedication to the party were widely respected.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, expressing his grief, said, "My dear brother Murasoli Selvam, who has been my brother and guide since childhood, offered me advice during difficult times and stood by my side throughout my journey. After the loss of the Chief Artist, today I have lost the last pillar of support in my life."

In 1992, Selvam became the first editor in Tamil Nadu’s history to be reprimanded by the Legislative Assembly’s Privileges Committee for allegedly violating the House's privileges. Despite the setback, he continued his work with Murasoli, using the pen name "Silandhi" (spider) and remaining active in writing. Even on the night before his passing, Selvam contributed a column to the publication.

Selvam is survived by his wife and daughter. His memoir, Murasoli Sila Ninaivugal, reflects his deep connection with the newspaper and the challenges faced by the party organ during turbulent times. Chief Minister Stalin remarked that Selvam also left a significant impact on cinema and election campaigns.
