New Delhi: Former Finance Secretary Rajiv Kumar has taken over as the new Election Commissioner of the country on Tuesday. He has become a member of the Election Commission of India along with Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora and Election Commissioner Sushil Chandra. He has replaced Ashok Lavasa in the Election Commission of the country.

Rajiv Kumar is a 1984 batch retired Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer. Kumar has more than 30 years of experience in public policy and administration. He holds a master's degree in Public Policy and Sustainability with BSC and LLB. Former Finance Secretary Rajiv Kumar was appointed Finance Secretary in July last year and his term ended in February this year.

Rajiv Kumar is known for working in the main areas of PM Narendra Modi's plan for financial inclusion. It includes big and important schemes like Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana and Mudra Loan Yojana. Rajiv Kumar's tenure in the Election Commission will be of five years. Accordingly, Rajiv Kumar will remain in the Election Commission even during the Lok Sabha elections to be held in 2024.
