New Delhi: Ashwani Kumar, a top Congress leader from Punjab and a former Union cabinet minister, resigned from the party Tuesday, just days before the state's election. Kumar, a long-serving Congressman, is the first senior UPA cabinet minister to resign after the party's humiliating defeat in the 2019 Lok Sabha election.

In the previous two years, the Congress has lost a slew of politicians, including its young faces like Jyotiraditya Scindia, Jitin Prasada, R P N Singh, Sushmita Dev, Priyanka Chaturvedi, and Laliteshpati Tripathi. Kumar's resignation, on the other hand, indicates that even the old guard is growing dissatisfied with the party's current state of things.

Former Goa Chief Minister Luizinho Faleiro and former Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh are two such veterans who have lately left the party.

Kumar's exit was particularly unexpected, given that he had been a long-time supporter of Congress president Sonia Gandhi and had been involved with the party for more than four decades.
