Former TMC MLA Mitali Roy Joins BJP Ahead of Dhupguri Bypolls

Kolkata: Former Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA from Dhupguri, Mitali Roy, has joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in North Bengal, just two days before the crucial Dhupguri bypolls. Roy had previously won the 2016 assembly elections from the Dhupguri seat on a TMC ticket but lost to BJP candidate Bishnupada Roy in the 2021 polls. Interestingly, she was seen campaigning for the TMC candidate in the Dhupguri bypoll just two days ago.

Mitali Roy is one of the most prominent figures in North Bengal politics. Her entry into the BJP was marked by the presence of BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar. Speaking about her transformation, Majumdar mentioned that Mitali Roy had lost 24 kilograms over the past year through yoga and drew inspiration from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Previously, Mitali Roy had actively campaigned for the TMC candidate in the Dhupguri bypoll, alongside state minister Arup Bishwas. She also held a meeting with Arup Bishwas before the campaign. However, sources suggest that Mitali Roy became disenchanted with the TMC leadership. After her defeat in the 2021 assembly election, the party's top leadership reportedly did not reach out to her or involve her in any meetings or rallies.

Amit Malviya, the state co-incharge of the BJP, took to social media to comment on the situation, suggesting that Mitali Roy's switch to the BJP was indicative of Mamata Banerjee losing control. He highlighted that her absence from the Opposition alliance's serious consideration was a result of the shifting political landscape in her home state. The Dhupguri by-election is scheduled for September 5. The Trinamool Congress has yet to respond to Mitali Roy's decision to join the BJP.
