HYDERABAD: In a contempt of court case, the Telangana High Court convicted four police officers, including an IPS officer, to four weeks in prison.
They were sentenced to jail on Monday by Justice G Radha Rani, who also imposed a fine of Rs 2,000 on each of them. The court also ordered the Hyderabad Commissioner of Police to take disciplinary action against Assistant Commissioner of Police AR Srinivas (who was then Deputy Commissioner of Police), as well as an Assistant Commissioner of Police, an Inspector, and a Sub-Inspector of Police from the Hyderabad Police Commissionerate.
The court suspended the sentence for 4 weeks so as to enable them to go for appeal.
A 49-year-old man and his mother, who now live in Thailand, filed the contempt of court petition. They claimed that no notices were issued to them under section 41-A of the CrPC and that the charge sheet was filed in a dowry harassment and domestic violence case (filed against them by the man's wife in 2019).
The petitioners wanted the police officers charged with violating Supreme Court norms while dealing with a marital disagreement issue to face consequences.
