Bangalore: A man named Saddam Hussain has been arrested for raping a Dalit minor girl in Hubli Navanagar, Dharwad, Karnataka. A case is being prosecuted against him under the POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act) Act. On Friday (May 3, 2024), he attacked two policemen with a knife in Sutagatti area and tried to escape from police custody. Under compulsion, the police also had to open fire, which hit his leg.

19-year-old Saddam Hussain is accused of not only raping a Dalit minor girl studying in his own class, but also made her pregnant. He then injured Dharwad Vidyagiri police inspector Sangamesh Bidiginal while trying to escape from the custody of Nawanagar police. Apart from him, he also attacked another constable. As soon as he swung the knife, the police fired one shot in the air and one towards his leg.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Rajiv M gave this information. While Saddam Hussain is undergoing treatment at KIMS Hospital, both the injured policemen have been admitted to the Civil Hospital. Saddam Hussein first gained the trust of the victim by befriending her by proxy, and then forcibly established sexual relations with her. He had also threatened the girl. He was arrested within 1 hour. A case is also being registered against him under SC/ST Act.

Police Commissioner Renuka Sukumar said that the police opened fire in self-defense. The condition of the injured is stable. Police had received information from the hospital that the minor girl was pregnant, after investigation an FIR was registered and the accused was identified. Health Minister Dinesh Gundu said that as soon as Dharwad Police got information about the incident, they took immediate action. He said that the police has done the right thing, in that situation what Saddam Hussein did is a crime and he will face consequences as per the law.
