The results of France's nine-year military presence in conflict-torn Mali, a government official stated in a statement shown on national television, were "not satisfactory."

After a collapse in ties with Mali's ruling military junta, French President Emmanuel Macron announced on Thursday that he was withdrawing soldiers from the nation.

After Mali's army seized power in a coup in 2020, and defied pleas to restore civilian rule swiftly, relations between the two nations worsened significantly. The smaller European Takuba unit of special soldiers, founded in 2020, will also depart Mali as a result of the French pullout after almost a decade. As part of its anti-jihadist Barkhane operation, France has 5,000 troops stationed in the Sahel, with the majority in Mali.

Macron stated that the pullout will take four to six months to complete. Colonel Abdoulaye Maiga, a spokesman for the African Union, described the French pullout as a "flagrant breach" of bilateral agreements.
