RafaH: As students returned home after fleeing the outbreak of violence in Sudan, Palestinians hugged at the Egyptian border with the blockaded Gaza Strip.
According to the Crossing and Border Authority in Gaza, "172 students arrived in the homeland through the Rafah border crossing, as the first batch of students coming from Sudan."

Young Palestinians fleeing the fighting were greeted by relatives at the southern entrance to Gaza, where there were hugs and tears. Nasser Qishta, a university student, said, "The situation was really difficult, it hit everywhere in Khartoum."

The Palestinian Embassy in Sudan got in touch with us, rounded up the students, and sent us to Gaza," continued Qistha, who was adamant that she would return to the capital of Sudan "when conditions improve."

Since then, a blockade led by Israel has been in place, making it nearly impossible for most residents to leave the area without the right documentation and money.

In the midst of the deadly conflict, governments have hurried to remove their citizens from Sudan. Medical student Wael Al-Masri described the situation as being similar to a "civil war." At the Rafah crossing, which Egyptian authorities had opened especially for their arrival, he said, "I thank everyone who helped us return.

Since Hamas seized power in 2007, Gaza's 2.3 million residents have witnessed numerous conflicts between Palestinian militants and Israel.
