New Delhi: Two additional judges were appointed to the Supreme Court of India by the Union of India on Friday. The Government announced the appointment of Justices Rajesh Bindal and Aravind Kumar to the Supreme Court in a notification.

The Chief Justices of the Allahabad High Court, Justice Rajesh Bindal, and the Gujrat High Court, Justice Aravind Kumar, are expected to take their oaths as Supreme Court judges on Monday.

Kiren Rijiju, the minister of law and justice, wrote on Twitter, As per provisions under the Constitution of India, President has appointed the following Chief Justices of High Courts as Judges of the Supreme Court. My best to them. 1.Rajesh Bindal, Chief Justice, Allahabad HC. 2.Aravind Kumar, Chief Justice, Gujarat HC."

The apex court will have a full complement of 34 judges after their appointment.

On January 31, 2023, the Supreme Court Collegium recommended Justices Rajesh Bindal and Arvind Kumar for appointment as Supreme Court judges.

The Collegium provided a thorough explanation of the parameters mentioned in recommending their names. In contrast, Justice Aravind Kumar's nomination received the approval of all members of the Collegium, with the exception of Justice KM Joseph, according to the statement.

The recommendation was given by the SC Collegium, which included Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dhananjaya Y Chandrachud and justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul, K.M. Joseph, M.R. Shah, Ajay Rastogi, and Sanjiv Khanna.
The Collegium stated that after carefully assessing the merit, integrity, and competence of qualified Chief Justices and senior puisne Judges of the High Courts and also taking into account a variety of considerations, they found both judges to be more deserving and suitable in all respects for being appointed as Judges of the Supreme Court of India.
The Collegium considered a number of factors while recommending the aforementioned candidates, including the seniority of the Chief Justices and senior puisne Judges in each of the parent High Courts, as well as the total seniority of the High Court Judges.

The merit, performance, and integrity of the judges were also taken into consideration, as well as the need to ensure diversity and inclusion in the Supreme Court through the representation of High Courts that are not or insufficiently represented there, the appointment of individuals from marginalised and backward segments of society, gender diversity, and minority representation.
