New Delhi: The G 63, a flagship SUV model from German automaker Mercedes-AMG, now has a sticker price of Rs. 3.3 crore after a price hike of Rs. 75 lakh (ex-showroom).

At the request of the then Shah of Iran, Mercedes-Benz built the first G-Wagon in 1979 as a tough, mobile military vehicle (an important Mercedes shareholder at the time).

However, the SUV soon gained acceptance among the general public as well. It is one of the few cars in the world to be equipped with three locking differentials and a low-range four-wheel-drive system.

Mercedes-AMG has maintained the design of the G-original wagon, while almost all automobiles regularly undergo facelifts to keep up with changing consumer preferences.

The G 63 retains its boxy shape and sports sharply cut retro-looking body panels and headlamps. The utilitarian design of the SUV also lends it attractive aesthetics.

The updated G 63 replaces the older model's massive 6.0-litre V8 engine with a state-of-the-art 4.0-litre, twin-turbocharged, V8 petrol engine to meet global emission norms.

It produces maximum power of 570 horsepower and peak torque of 850 Nm. A nine-speed automatic gearbox with three electronically locked differentials and four-wheel drive is mated to the engine.

In India, there is a long list of payers on G-Wagons. From actors like Ranbir Kapoor, Jimmy Shergill, Akhil Akkineni and Janhvi Kapoor to cricketer Hardik Pandya and business tycoon Anant Ambani, many people own the G 63 model. The SUV's sense of safety and its capable powertrain have made celebrities prefer the G-Class over its competitors.
