NEW DELHI: The G20 Summit is just around the corner, and expectation is building as US President Joe Biden prepares to embark on a significant diplomatic journey. From September 7 to 10, President Biden will reahch New Delhi to participate in the G20 Summit, marking an important moment in international relations. A recent White House statement has confirmed that during his visit, President Biden will engage in a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Modi on September 8.

The decision for President Biden to attend the G20 Summit and hold these crucial bilateral meetings was initially disclosed by American National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan during the BRICS Summit on August 22. This signifies the United States' commitment to actively participating in global affairs and strengthening international cooperation.

During his visit, President Biden will use his platform to advocate strongly for the reform of multilateral development banks (MDBs). He will propose measures aimed at enhancing these institutions' financial capacity, with the overarching goal of addressing pressing global issues. This includes poverty reduction, the promotion of prosperity, and the urgent battle against climate change. President Biden also intends to convey a powerful message of solidarity with the global south, reaffirming America's commitment to a more equitable world.

At the G20 Summit, President Biden and his international counterparts will engage in discussions on collaborative efforts to tackle various global challenges. These discussions will encompass critical topics such as the transition to clean energy, mitigating the effects of climate change, and addressing the economic and social consequences of the conflict in Ukraine, led by Vladimir Putin. Additionally, there will be a focus on strengthening multilateral development banks, such as the World Bank, as essential tools in the fight against poverty and global challenges.

The White House has underlined the significance of President Biden's visit to New Delhi, acknowledging Prime Minister Modi's leadership in steering the G20. The United States reaffirms its commitment to the G20 as the primary forum for economic cooperation, and it is poised to host the summit in 2026, solidifying its dedication to this international partnership.

While the details of President Biden and Prime Minister Modi's bilateral talks are still being ironed out, they are expected to build upon the agreements reached during Modi's state visit to the United States in June. Due to India's numerous diplomatic commitments during the summit and time constraints, the scope of this bilateral engagement may be somewhat limited. However, the groundwork for future cooperation will undoubtedly be laid.

India is on track to host the next Quad leaders' summit in 2024, potentially leading to a second visit by President Biden to New Delhi early next year. This would be a momentous occasion, as it would mark the first time an American president has visited India twice during their first term in office, underscoring the significance of the Indo-US partnership.
