New Delhi: The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways launched the world's first hydrogen-based advanced Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV) pilot project on Wednesday, signalling a significant move away from fossil fuels and toward environmental protection.
The launch was attended by Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Hardeep Singh Puri, the Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas of India, RK Singh, the Minister of Power, and Mahendra Nath Pandey, the Union Minister for Heavy Industries.
This Pilot project was established by Toyota Kirloskar Motor Pvt. Ltd. and the International Center for Automotive Technology (ICAT) to investigate and assess the world's most sophisticated FCEV Toyota Mirai, which runs on hydrogen, on Indian roads and weather conditions.
This aims to raise knowledge of hydrogen and FCEV technology, as well as disseminate its benefits, in order to promote India's transition to a hydrogen-based society. "Renewable energy and abundant biomass may be used to produce green hydrogen. The introduction and adoption of technology to tap into the potential of green hydrogen would be critical in ensuring India's future energy security." Gadkari said.
