Gandhiji was a vegetarian and at one point of his life he gave up even tea and coffee. Hardly any person in the world could have done so many such experiments with food, as Gandhiji did with food. While Mahatma Gandhi avoided the consumption of sugar, the king of fruits could not avoid his craving for mangoes. In many of his writings, Mahatma Gandhi has expressed regret for this redundancy.

Mahatma Gandhi agreed to drink goat's milk at the behest of Kasturba Gandhi. Gandhiji knew that his favourite fruits and vegetables contained salt naturally, so he avoided taking extra salt in his diet. According to Slate, Mahatma Gandhi started taking salt-free diet from 1911. However, after 1920, Gandhiji started taking light salt in his diet. He did not take more than 30 grains (grains) of salt per day in his diet.

Talking about Mahatma Gandhi's food habits or food quantity, he used to take 8 tolls of sprouted wheat, 8 tolls for almond , 8 tolls of each leaf, six  lemons and 2 ounces of honey in his diet. Gandhiji used to have his first meal at 11 am and the second at 6:15 pm. Gandhiji used to take hot water with honey and lemon during the day. Gandhiji observed many fasts before independence. Mahatma Gandhi fasted 17 times during the struggle for independence and his longest fast was 21 days.
