Mumbai: Arrested gangster Aijaz Lakdawala has told the Mumbai police that Chhota Rajan's henchmen conspired to kill fugitive underworld don Dawood Ibrahim in 1998, but he could not succeed. Lakdawala (50), who is absconding for two decades and considered close to Dawood, made the revelation during the Mumbai Police's Crime Branch inquiry after his arrest last month in cases of extortion and murder.

Lakdawala has told the police that Chhota Shakeel's operatives attacked him and gangster Chhota Rajan after a failed attempt to kill underworld don, Dawood Ibrahim. A crime branch source has said that some of Chhota Rajan's close associates, along with Indian agencies, had planned to kill Dawood Ibrahim in Karachi in 1998. The team of Vicky Malhotra, Farid Tanasha, Balu Dokre, Lakdawala, Vinod Matkar, Sanjay Ghate, and Baba Reddy also went to Karachi to kill Dawood, but those people did not succeed. Dawood was to visit a dargah in Karachi after his daughter Maria's death.

The source said, 'Vicky Malhotra and others were waiting for him, but Dawood reached the dargah with tight security after getting information from a Nepal MP and the attackers had to postpone their operation.'
