Italy: The National Fire Corps of Italy tweeted that four persons were dead and six others were missing when a residential building fell in the Sicilian town of Ravanusa due to a methane gas explosion.

According to sources, the explosion on Saturday night destroyed three structures. According to the RAI News 24 public broadcaster, two individuals have been retrieved alive from the wreckage so far, while 50 families have been evacuated from nearby buildings.

The gas had accumulated underground or in a closed environment, according to Agrigento Fire Brigade Commander Giuseppe Merendino. He went on to say that the spill could have been caused by landslides or bad weather.

The captain of the local fire fighters, Giuseppe Merendino, claimed earlier on Sunday that the explosion had injured a total of 11 persons. The houses caught fire after a natural gas pipe ruptured in the village of 11,000 inhabitants, which is near Agrigento, a city in the southwest of the island noted for its Greek temples, according to a priest who was celebrating mass nearby on Saturday evening.
