KOLKATA: In an unprecedented move, the GD Birla School, a prestigious educational institution in Kolkata, announced the suspension of its operations for an indefinite period on Thursday morning.
Early Thursday morning, a notice was seen pinned to the school gate, stating that the decision to cease activities in the school was made with the safety of the students in mind. "We are compelled to close the school for the safety and protection of the children and teachers due to the current law and order situation created by agitation inside and outside the school. Please bear with us."
A group of parents of students from GD Birla school recently protested in front of the school. The guardians claimed that even after the school reopened following a long shut down due to a pandemic, the authorities refused to allow a section of the students to attend lessons because their fees from the pandemic closure were still owed.
The court ruled on Wednesday that private schools cannot deny admission or advancement based on unpaid tuition. The division bench also prohibited private institutions from withholding pupils' marksheets.
Following that, on Thursday, the GD Birla School administration posted a notice of the school's indefinite closure. However, there had been no official notification from the school administrators to the public on this matter until the complaint was submitted.
