New Delhi: Lieutenant General Manoj Mukund Narwane will take over as the 28th Army Chief of the country on 31 December. Narwane, who has just been posted as the Vice Chief of Army Staff, will take the place of General Bipin Rawat. General Rawat's three-year term is ending today. The chief of the three wings of the army will be of the same batch of the National Defense Academy (NDA) along with taking over the post of army chief of Narwane. Airforce chief RKS Bhadauria, naval chief Admiral Karambir Singh and MM Narwane are the 56th batch batchmates of the NDA.

Earlier on Monday, General Rawat made the first CDS of the country. The government officially announced the creation of CDS on 24 December. CDS will be the Four Star General and will serve as the Secretary of the Department of Military Affairs, a new department under the Ministry of Defense and advise the government (political leadership) on military matters. The government made it clear that CDS will not directly control the command and units of the Army, Air Force, and Navy. But under it, there will be shared command and division of the three parts of the army.

The Chairman of the first three armies of India, ie CDS, will be the Chief of the Department of Military Affairs under the Ministry of Defense. CDS will be able to contact the Defense Minister directly on issues related to defense matters and will be able to give feedback. All the combined command of the three armies i.e. Tri-Service Command will now be under CDS. After the Kargil battle, the Kargil Review Committee and Naresh Chandra Committee recommended CDS.
