BERLIN: The German Bundestag, or lower house of Parliament, has decided to provide Ukraine with "full support," allowing heavy weapons to be delivered to the war-torn country.
As per the statement, a related motion voted by a vote of 586 to 100 on Thursday authorises Ukraine to receive "effective, particularly heavy, weaponry and complicated systems."
Deliveries were to be sped up as well. According to a Bundestag statement, Germany was also asked to "back all attempts by the Ukrainian government to negotiate a cease-fire in direct negotiations with the Russian leadership."
After settling initial disagreements, parliamentary groups from the ruling Social Democratic Party, the Green Party, and the Free Democratic Party, as well as the opposition CDU/CSU union, tabled the proposal. Concerns over a possible escalation of the Russia-Ukraine war prompted the right-wing Alternative for Germany and the Left Party to proclaim their opposition to the idea ahead of the vote.
Minister of Defense Christine Lambrecht said on Tuesday that Germany would equip Ukraine with Gepard anti-aircraft tanks and train its personnel.
