KIEV: Visiting UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres criticised the 15-member Security Council for failing to prevent or terminate Russia's ongoing war against Kiev during a joint press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Guterres, who arrived in Ukraine on Wednesday evening after a trip to Moscow, said at a press conference here on Thursday evening: "Let me be very clear: It failed to do everything in its power to prevent and stop this war," the BBC reported. This was "a cause of immense sadness, frustration, and fury," he claimed.
"I am here to say to you President, and to the people of Ukraine, we will not give up," the Secretary-General assured Zelensky, who had previously criticized the Security Council for failing to act since the invasion began on February 24. Guterres said, "The UN is the 1,400 staff members in Ukraine who are trying to provide assistance, food, cash (and) other sorts of support."
Zelensky, for one, stated that Ukraine is prepared to begin urgent negotiations to evacuate people from Mariupol and that it is dependent on the UN's assistance. He also disclosed that they talked about the "Russian-caused food crisis, more humanitarian aid for our country, and the repatriation of Ukrainians deported by occupiers."
