Hyderabad: Removal of idols and debris from Hussainsagar lake is being done by Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) in coordination with GHMC sanitation workers. The GHMC sanitation wing on Sunday started cleaning artificial ponds filled with idols and worship materials at various Ganesh pandals in the city. According to GHMC officials, the sweepers were working round the clock in three shifts to lift the idols from the ponds and clean the puja material scattered on the roads/streets.

Idols larger than 10 feet were immersed in the tank dam, while smaller idols were taken to other points around the lake. The idols were immersed during the day in various artificial ponds set up across the city like Kapra Chervu, Malkam Chervu, IDL Tank, Hasmatpet Lake, Safilguda Cheruvu. Around 1,667 workers were deployed in 28 artificial ponds to clear debris, worship material and take out Ganesh idols after immersion. GHMC has put into service 20 excavators, 21 earth movers, 29 mini-tippers and 44 vehicles with a capacity of 10 tonnes to remove the post-discharge waste.

On Sunday, the Municipal Corporation distributed free masks to the devotees. It appealed to them to take all precautions in view of Kovid. Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) set up 101 places including procession routes to provide free water packets to the devotees. The officials deployed boats with expert swimmers at Hussainsagar to help in case of any emergency.
