Sakshi Malik, the trailblazing Indian wrestler, was honored with a coveted spot on Time magazine's esteemed list of the 100 Most Influential People of 2024. This recognition, bestowed upon her on Wednesday, April 17, underscores her unwavering dedication to advocating for the rights of female athletes and her pivotal role in spearheading a powerful campaign against alleged sexual misconduct within the wrestling community.

Malik, along with notable figures like Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia, initiated a protest that reverberated globally, starting at the iconic Jantar Mantar in India. There, they demanded the immediate arrest and legal accountability of Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the former president of the Wrestling Federation of India, who faced allegations of sexual harassment, intimidation, and stalking – accusations vehemently denied by Singh.

Their collective outcry transcended a mere call for justice, evolving into a year-long crusade that garnered widespread national and international support. Malik, e “This fight is no longer only for India’s female wrestlers,” said Malik of the movement she helped spark, “it is for the daughters of India whose voices have been silenced time and again.” While Malik's efforts resulted in Singh stepping down from his position, his close associate, Sanjay Singh, assumed the presidency, prompting Malik to retire from the sport.
