Kolkata: A mob of furious protesters blocked the National Highway in Howrah district of West Bengal on Thursday (June 9, 2022). Due to which the traffic came to a standstill and people had to face a lot of problems. The protest comes days after BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma was suspended for allegedly making derogatory remarks against Prophet Mohammad. Wearing cap and lungi on the head, the protesters created a ruckus on NH116. During this, they raised religious slogans and burnt tyres. Black smoke can be seen spreading in the sky in the video of the demonstration which has gone viral on social media.
The blockade started from Nibra (Kona Expressway-NH 16 Junction) at around 10:30 am and ended at 9:30 pm. Due to this there was a jam for more than 5 hours. Many people were forced to leave their vehicles and walk on foot. Traffic came to a standstill for about 20 km. Unconcerned with the problems being faced by the commuting people, the religious crowd kept the streets occupied. At the same time, instead of taking action against the mob which almost brought the traffic to a halt in Howrah, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee asked them to go to other states to protest and disrupt the lives of the people.
Mamta said, 'Why should we suffer because of the communal politics of some people for the purpose of narrow political gains? Protest by going to UP, Gujarat… the states where BJP is in power. They are not in power in Bengal, so don't protest for publicity here. We are requesting all with folded hands to stay away from the politics of blockade. Someone will provoke for a day. Tomorrow, no one will be around! If there is a riot tomorrow, no one will have an answer. Mamta further said that, 'I do not support this type of violent protest. If you all are so angry then go to Delhi. Protest there peacefully and demand the resignation of the Prime Minister. Why are you causing problems here? I urge all of you to maintain peace and withdraw the protest. Trinamool Congress (TMC) minister Firhad Hakim, who sat with Banerjee, claimed that Islam is a religion of peace and does not support unrest, riots or trouble.
