Noted actress Nafisa Ali has joined the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in Goa in the presence of party chief and West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee. TMC is trying to make inroads into Goa in the 2022 assembly elections. Mamata Banerjee arrived in Goa on Thursday evening on her first visit to the state, which is seen as her attempt to assess the political mood in the BJP-ruled state ahead of the elections.
Mamata Banerjee, who is on a three-day visit to the coastal region, arrived at Dabolim Airport around 5.30 pm, where she was received by TMC MP Derek O'Brien and local leaders. A senior Trinamool Congress leader said she will hold discussions with community representatives on Friday evening. On October 30, Mamata Banerjee is scheduled to hold a press conference after which she will visit the Basilica of Baum Jesus in Old Goa and Bodgeshwar temple in Mapusa.
According to her programme, she will hold discussions with vegetable and flower vendors at a market in Mapusa, nine km from the state capital, on Saturday. The Trinamool Congress is trying to increase its footprint at the national level after its outstanding victory in the West Bengal Assembly elections early this year and has made inroads into the BJP-ruled Goa and Tripura. Former Goa CM Luizinho Falerio ended his decades-old association with Congress and joined the TMC last month.
