Patna: The cities of Bihar have got rid of those high heaps of garbage. These are those piles of garbage, which have been becoming mountains over the years. It is starting from the capital Patna. Treatment of legacy waste (Legacy West) in the state is to be started from Patna for which the process of agency selection has started. After Patna, the work of heritage waste treatment has started in Muzaffarpur.

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) is very critical about heritage waste. The tribunal has ordered that all urban bodies are to ensure strict compliance with Solid Waste Management Rules-2016. These manuals have been associated with waste and debris management. If we talk about the urban bodies of the state, then work has started in this direction, but the floor is still far away. Due to the lack of a proper waste management system in any city, huge piles of garbage have been set up. For years or so, these many decades have been named legacy garbage.

Due to these heaps of legacy waste, both water and air pollution are increasing. Long-time rotting waste is affecting even groundwater. Apart from this, due to the formation of poisonous gas in it, these heaps of garbage are always smoldered. On the instructions of the city development and housing department, Patna has started the process of treatment of legacy waste. Then it is going to be done in Muzaffarpur and other cities as well.

Plant to be set up soon in Berea: It has been learned that applications have been issued by the Patna Municipal Corporation to the agency selection for the treatment of heritage waste with the bio-mining method. A 300-tonne capacity plant has been set up in Berea. Along with setting up the plant, its operation and maintenance will also have to be done by the agency. Apart from this, a compost-making plant will also be established there. For this, a pre-bid meeting has been organized for 10 March.
