Google Chrome Adopts Weekly Updates to Counter Threats

Google Chrome is set to receive more frequent updates in order to counter security threats. Google is making a significant change to the patching schedule for Chromium, the open-source project that serves as the foundation for Chrome and various other browsers. Instead of the previous bi-weekly cycle, updates will now be released on a weekly basis. This adjustment aims to narrow the window between updates, consequently reducing the opportunity for malicious actors to exploit vulnerabilities.

This revised update strategy will kick off with Google Chrome version 116, as revealed in an official company blog post.

The Chromium open-source initiative enables unrestricted access to its source code, enabling scrutiny of developer discussions, modifications, and remedies made by contributors in real time. Subsequently, these corrections get incorporated into Chrome updates, subject to stability checks prior to deployment as a final release.

However, the transparency inherent in this process has been leveraged by malicious entities to identify weaknesses before the fixes are propagated to users. This exploitation has led to cyber-attacks. Recognizing this issue, Google had taken measures back in 2020 by reducing the average time between patches from 35 days to bi-weekly updates. This adjustment aimed to mitigate the risk of threat actors capitalizing on n-day exploits. While not infallible, this strategy curtailed the time available to threat actors for exploiting vulnerabilities.

Enhancing the frequency of updates bolsters the security posture of browsers based on Chromium. Nevertheless, the Android ecosystem presents a more complex challenge for Google in terms of control. The deployment of security fixes and updates on Android hinges on manufacturers rolling out software patches, a process that can extend over several months. This extended timeline provides threat actors with opportunities to capitalize on software bugs.
