New Delhi:- The Pixel 7a, which the company launched last month as the last addition to its Pixel 7 smartphone lineup, could come with a feature that reduces the screen refresh rate when the phone is exposed to bright sunlight. A Pixel owner recently shared details about how the phone automatically adjusts the display refresh rate in bright sunlight and shade, suggesting the feature is intentional. However, users who want to always use the maximum refresh rate on their Pixel 7a can enable certain hidden settings on their phones.

According to a Reddit post by user u/pawlikx_iron, the Pixel 7a drops the screen refresh rate from 90 Hz to 60 Hz when using the phone in bright sunlight. According to users, the maximum refresh rate is automatically restored when the phone is placed back in the absence of sunlight.

According to the answers in the comments section, thermal throttling (the process of slowing down the CPU when the chip temperature is too high) doesn't seem to be the culprit. Recently, the Pixel 7a could feature a slightly different version of the Tensor G2 chip found in the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro, resulting in lower performance compared to Google's flagship chipset. was reported to be possible.

Meanwhile, Esper's Mishaal Rahman said the Pixel 7a's lower refresh rate is Google's open source for devices designed to boost the phone's refresh rate at 60Hz lock when the ambient brightness is above 50,000. Based on code commits, he added that it was intentional that other Pixel phones should offer the same functionality.

Users who want to bypass this feature on their Pixel 7a can use a workaround suggested by one of the users in the comments to force the phone's display to always update at his 90Hz. The solution is to enable the hidden developer options menu by tapping Settings > About phone > Build number.

When enabled, users can permanently set the display refresh rate to 90 Hz by opening the Settings app and tapping Developer options > Force peak refresh rate. However, please note that enabling this feature may increase battery consumption as smartphones do not optimize the refresh rate to optimize power consumption.
