Kabul: Former British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, now serving as the UN Special Envoy for Global Education, has emphasized the necessity of continuously challenging the religious assertions put forth by the Taliban.

Brown's statement comes in response to the recent decision by the Taliban to prohibit girls from attending secondary school, a move that has sparked global outrage.

In an interview with the BBC on Tuesday, Brown condemned the Taliban's decision, labeling it as both an "outrage" and a "betrayal of promises" made by the group when it seized control of Afghanistan the previous year.

He expressed the imperative of countering the Taliban's religious claims and demonstrating that their interpretation of Islam is not the sole or accurate understanding.

"We need to contest their religious claims all the time," Brown emphasized, asserting that a broader spectrum of interpretations exists within Islam, beyond the Taliban's narrow perspective.

Moreover, Brown highlighted the international community's responsibility to support the Afghan population. He advocated for the provision of humanitarian aid and the collaborative effort to revive Afghanistan's economy, emphasizing the significance of showing the Afghan people that they are not being forsaken.

"We need to show the Afghan people that we are not abandoning them," Brown underscored. "We need to show them that we are there to help them rebuild their country."

The decision of the Taliban to deny girls access to secondary education has evoked widespread condemnation internationally. The United Nations has characterized the move as a "major setback for women and girls in Afghanistan."

While the Taliban has defended its stance by citing adherence to Islamic law, experts assert that the ban lacks foundation in true Islamic teachings and instead serves as a strategy to solidify the group's power.

This education ban imposed by the Taliban presents a substantial challenge for the global community. As this situation unfolds, international actors are faced with the formidable task of exerting pressure on the Taliban to reverse its decision, thereby securing the right of girls to pursue education and fostering a more inclusive and equitable future for Afghanistan.
