New Delhi: Amid the boast over the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), a senior central government official said that those born in India before July 1, 1987, are real citizens of India according to the law. They do not need to be afraid of this law.

As per the changes made in the Citizenship Act in 2004, those citizens of the rest of the state except Assam, whose mother or father is Indian and not an illegal migrant, will be treated as Indian citizens. In view of the violence happening across the country regarding the law, this explanation has been given by the government. The official has said that people born in India before 1 July 1987 or their parents born in the country before that year, according to the law, will be considered as Indian citizens.

The official said that the cut off limit in the case of Assam is 1971. He has said that we urge people not to compare the Citizenship Amendment Act with NRC, because the code of limitation is different for Assam. According to the Citizenship Act of 2004, those born in India on or after 26 January 1950 or after 1978 but before 3 December 2004 are actual citizens.
