Patna: The Bihar government has directed magistrates of all cities to gather information about registered and unregistered temples and hospices in their districts. The magistrates of 38 districts have to inform the Bihar Pradesh Religious Trust Council (BSRTC) about the temple and hospice in two months. Bihar Pradesh Religious Trust Council Chairman Akhilesh Kumar Jain said that after receiving the details from 9 divisions, the Religious Trust Council will ask for the unregistered temples and hospice to be registered with the Bihar Pradesh Religious Trust Council. The Divisional Commissioners of Magadh, Saran and Koshi have assured the Dharma Nyas Parishad to send the list of registered and unregistered temples and hospices in their districts within two months.

At the same time, Jain said that the religious trust council has made the same demand from the commissioners of other divisions. For this,  a meeting has been held with the DCs of Darbhanga and Patna on 11th February and 12th February. Under the Bihar Hindu Religion Trust Act, 1950, all public and hospices in the state are required to be registered with the BSRTC. Under this, after registration is done, the temples and hospices will have to pay 4% of their total income annually to the Dharma Nyas Parishad.

There are about 4,500 temples registered in the same state, out of which only 250 to 300 temples pay taxes to the BSRTC. There are more than 10,000 registered and unregistered public temples in the state. Akhilesh Jain said that if the temple built in one's house is open to individuals, then they should be registered with the trust. The temple can come under the category of private only if only the family members worship there.
