New Delhi: The Central government is going to increase the legal age of marriage of girls from 18 years to 21 years. The proposal has also been approved by the Cabinet. But now the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) is upset with the government's decision. the AIMPLB has termed the central government's proposal as interference in personal freedom. It has also requested the government to refrain from fixing the age of marriage.

In a statement issued on Monday night, AIMPLB General Secretary Maulana Khalid Saifullah Rahmani said that marriage is a very important need of life but no age of marriage can be fixed as it is also a matter of protection of moral values of the society and protection of society from moral deprivation. He said that "this is why no age has been prescribed for marriage in various religions including Islam. It depends entirely on the conscience of the parents. If a girl's parents feel that their daughter deserves to be married before the age of 21 and she can discharge all her post-marriage responsibilities, it is cruel to stop her from getting married and also interfere with an adult's personal freedom. It is also expected to increase crime in society.''

AIMPLB General Secretary said, "It is neither in the interest of girls nor in the society to increase the minimum age of marriage from 18 years to 21 years and to declare marriage illegal before the prescribed age. Rather, it can greatly damage moral values.''
