Bangalore: The Constitutional Committee on Backward Castes and Minority Welfare in Karnataka has issued an order to conduct a survey of missionary churches in the state. It was reported that the aim was to curb illegal churches and forced conversions. The commissioners of several departments and districts of the government will get it done.

The decision was taken at a meeting led by BJP MLA Shekhar on October 13. MLA said the move is necessary to prevent forced conversions in the state. BJP MLA said that representatives of backward castes and minority departments, home, revenue and law department have also said that there are 1,790 churches in the state. The Committee has said that it should find out how many of them are being operated illegally. He said that according to the Home Ministry, 36 cases of forced conversion have been registered.

Shekhar said, "The social evil of forced conversion is spreading rapidly. In many places, the residential colony is also being converted into a church and a Bible society. We have to find out about illegal priests and such churches and take action against them. Bible societies and churches that have not been registered and not allowed are considered illegal.''
