Mumbai: The Maharashtra government has decided to give a personal loan of up to Rs 50,000 to jail inmates. The prisoners will be given this loan in lieu of the work done in the jail. State Home Minister Dilip Walse Patil said that the Maharashtra State Co-operative Bank will charge 7 per cent interest in lieu of the loan. The decision is currently being implemented as a pilot project at Pune's Yerawada Central Jail.

The same order on the scheme has been issued on Tuesday. The officials claim that giving loans to prisoners is the first case of its kind in the country. According to the news received, the prisoners lodged in the jail will not need any guarantor for this loan. It will be distributed on individual bonds.

Also, the bank will determine the amount based on earnings, skills, daily wages. This type of loan is called a bad loan. According to reports, the government's scheme is expected to benefit about 1,055 jail inmates. It is being said that the amount received from the loan can be used by the prisoners for lawyer's fees, to help family members, etc.
