After passing from the Parliament, there has been a lot of opposition to the citizenship law. During the updating of National Population Register (NPR) 2020, no documents will be taken from anyone. While answering a written question in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday, Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai said that the government has not yet taken any decision to prepare the National Register of Indian Citizens (NRIC) at the national level.

NPR data will be collected from April 1 to September 30 along with the census housing-listing phase. Some non-BJP ruled states like Punjab, Kerala, Bengal, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh have expressed apprehension about NPR and are criticizing the process. The goal of updating NPR is to create an overall identity database of every common resident of the country.

The notification for the housing-listed phase of Census 2011 has been issued amid the recently started uproar over the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). Data for the NPR was collected in 2010 with the housing-listed phase of the Census 2011. In 2015, this data was updated through a door-to-door survey. While updating in 2015, the government had asked for details like Aadhaar and mobile number. This time, information related to driving license and voter id card will also be collected.
