Govt to put up Indian Antarctic Bill, 2022 in Rajya Sabha Today

NEW DELHI: The Central government will table 'The Indian Antarctic Bill-2022, today, July 27 in the Rajya Sabha even as the opposition parties are expected to protest against the suspension of 19 members.

On Tuesday, the Rajya Sabha suspended 19 opposition members for a week for interrupting House procedures. The Trinamool Congress has seven members, the DMK has six, the TRS has three, the CPI-M has two, and the CPI has one. The Members were suspended for exhibiting complete contempt for the House and the authority of the Chair.

Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh will move to the bill that the 'Indian Antarctic Bill, 2022,' as passed by the Lok Sabha, be considered. The Bill proposes to extend the application of domestic laws to India's Antarctic research outposts. India operates two active research stations in the Antarctic, Maitri and Bharti, where scientists conduct research. Private tours and expeditions to Antarctica would be prohibited under the Bill's provisions unless accompanied by a permit or written authorization from a Member country.


The 'Weapons of Mass Destruction and Their Delivery Systems (Prohibition of Unlawful Activities) Amendment Bill, 2022' is also set to pass the Upper House. Dr. S. Jaishankar, Minister of External Affairs, moved the Bill, as passed by the Lok Sabha, to be considered on July 19. 

On Monday, while members of the BJP continued to debate the Bill amid sloganeering from the opposition benches, the Chair stated that the minister's remark on the Bill, and its consideration and passage, would take place the following day. However, due to opposition demonstrations, it could not be brought up on Tuesday.
