NEW DELHI: Nitin Gadkari, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister, told Parliament that all Electric Vehicles two-wheeler companies had been served with show-cause notices after their cars caught fire due to battery concerns.
In response to a question in the Lok Sabha, he stated that show-cause notices have been sent to the CEOs and Managing Directors of EV companies.
The minister stated that further action would be taken based on the comments obtained from EV companies.
Gadkari was asked about actions taken by manufacturers to ensure rigorous testing of EVs, as well as whether the government penalised EV manufacturers for fire occurrences. He said that the government had formed an expert committee to recommend safety standards for batteries, battery components, and related systems.
Based on available fire incident information, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has issued a show-cause notice to the CEOs and MDs of the concerned two-wheeler electric scooter manufacturers, requesting that they explain why the relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act should not be invoked against them.
Earlier, Krishan Pal Gurjar, Minister of State for Heavy Industries, informed Parliament that three manufacturers recalled a total of 6,656 electric two-wheelers in April of this year.
